GlaxoSmithKline Top Pharmaceutical Promoter to Leading Managed Care Decision Makers, Cognet~X, Inc. Reports    

FEASTERVILLE---(February 14, 2002)---In its first full year post-merger, GlaxoSmithKline made its presence known to influential managed care executives. According to Cognet~X, Inc. data, GlaxoSmithKline generated the most promotional contacts to key managed care pharmacy directors during 2001.

Data from Cognet~X’s PAR-Rx (Promotional Assessment Research) Report™ indicate that GlaxoSmithKline surpassed the promotional level of its nearest competitor by 18% for the full year. The PAR-Rx Report tracks promotion to the most influential pharmacy directors in the managed care marketplace. 

During the first three of 2001, GlaxoSmithKline generated more contacts to PAR-Rx panelists than did any other corporation as the new company introduced itself and its combined product portfolio to key managed care customers. Among the top-promoted GSK brands: the asthma medication Advair Diskus, the oral antidiabetic agent Avandia and the antidepressant Paxil. 

In the fourth quarter, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. placed first, and GlaxoSmithKline was second. 

Johnson & Johnson placed second for the full-year totals, as its fourth-quarter promotion climbed 25% due to increased contacts for proton pump inhibitor Aciphex (which Janssen Pharmaceutica co-markets with Eisai Inc.) and Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical’s quinolone antibiotic Levaquin. 

According to PAR-Rx Report data, Johnson & Johnson was followed closely by Merck & Co. Inc., Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., Pfizer and American Home Products Co. Fourth-quarter promotion by Novartis and American Home Products rose above third-quarter levels rose 32% and 22%, respectively, above third-quarter levels. 

Abbott Laboratories placed seventh in full-year promotional activity. AstraZeneca PLC and Aventis Pharma AG tied for eighth-place overall, as Aventis’ fourth-quarter promotion rose nearly 40%. Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Pharmacia Corp. rounded out the top 10 corporations, Cognet~X data show.
